Château de Tiffauges

Vendée, Pays de la Loire

Set in an exceptional site, at the confluence of the Sèvre Nantaise and one of its tributaries, the Crûme, the castle, with its ovoid enclosure of about 700 metres' development and an interior area of nearly 3 hectares, is the typical example of a medieval fortress. Gilles de Rais, companion in arms of Joan of Arc, is one of the striking figures of the late Middle Ages. A great war captain, it was to Tiffauges that he retired after the French campaign against the English. There he was a patron, an alchemist... and a murderer. Executed in Nantes at the age of 36, he became the Bluebeard of legend.
