Château de Noirmoutier
The castle of Noirmoutier, in the Vendée, was built at the end of the 12th century by Pierre V de la Garnache. It was then the symbol of the lord's authority and power, and the fortress guarded the port and the town.
It protected the inhabitants during the many raids by the English fleet in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Bretons in 1430, the Spanish in 1524 and the Dutch in 1674. From 1793 the castle was marked by the Vendée wars.
