Sare
Sare is a village of the Basque Country, on the border with Spain, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Backed against the Pyrenean chain, it occupies a basin surrounded by a cirque of mountains open to the east and north. Its geological history formed caves occupied during the Aurignacian, and the Bronze Age left many funerary monuments on its plateaus.
The village keeps the cult of traditions and cross-border life. You see sturdy seventeenth-century houses, the church of Saint-Martin and the chapel of Sainte-Catherine, as well as oratories with ex-votos engraved by sailors. The little train of La Rhune takes you up to the neighbouring summit, from which the panorama is remarkable.
