La Bastide-Clairence
The village was founded in 1283 with the building of a fortified house on the banks of the Joyeuse, a river that flows to join the Adour. In 1312, the village became a bastide. La Bastide is welcoming: during the Inquisition, many Jews expelled from Spain found refuge there. You can admire the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, which has kept from its past a Romanesque porch where the side cloisters meet. Take the long main street lined with whitewashed houses that will lead you to Place des Arceaux: you will appreciate the high quality of the craftsmen's workshops that dot the streets.
