Grottes d'Isturitz et d'Oxocelhaya

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Neanderthal man was the first tenant of this place, a point of convergence of the Franco-Cantabrian world at the foot of the Pyrenees. Cro-Magnon then succeeded him, our ancestor, a cave artist, tinkerer and inventor of tools that would change the face of the world. In all, more than 70,000 objects, paintings and engravings brought to light on the site testify to the importance of this place.

Explore first the Isturitz cave, an incredible archaeological deposit discovered in 1895, and marvel at its gigantic proportions, warm colours and the imposing presence of a stalagmitic pillar that has resisted erosion.
