Pas de Roland
Itxassou is a small village in the heart of the Basque Country, near the Spanish border. Itxassou has 1,600 inhabitants and lives mainly from livestock farming and tourism.
Its reputation was made by the cherry festival: Held every year in June, several tonnes of cherries are tasted there.
Itxassou is also one of the most beautiful churches of the Basque Country.
Itxassou is the "Pas de Roland" (Roland's Step), that very narrow passage the Nive has carved in the rock and where legend places the fights between Roland, Charlemagne's nephew, and the Saracens and the Basques.
