Ainhoa
It is one of the most typical villages of the Basque Country. Its main street is distinguished by old houses with tiled roofs that overhang whitewashed façades, brightened by half-timbering and shutters painted red-brown or green, to which is often added a main beam adorned with engraved inscriptions. And there is of course the communal pelota court. The church is also quite characteristic with its two levels of interior galleries, reserved for men. A few kilometres from the Spanish border, Ainhoa is a former bastide founded in the thirteenth century as a staging post on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
