Le Petit Train de la Rhune

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Petit Train de la Rhune is a rack railway linking the Col de Saint-Ignace, in the commune of Sare, to the summit of La Rhune, the emblematic 905-metre mountain of the Basque Country, on the border between France and Spain. It is one of the few rack railways still running in France.

The climb in old-fashioned wooden carriages takes about half an hour and crosses summer pastures where pottoks (small Basque horses), sheep and cows graze. From the summit, the panorama stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pyrenees and the Basque coast, in clear weather.

The train runs in season, with occasional events such as special evenings. The weather, often changeable on these ridges, can cause interruptions.
