Château d'Urtubie

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

With the permission of King Edward III of England, Martin d'Urtubie began building a castle in 1341 at Urrugne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It was partly razed by his wife, then rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century, and underwent a final transformation in 1745.

From the 14th century survive the fortified keep, the curtain wall with its wall walk and the postern flanked by two towers. The Renaissance residence and the tower housing a stone spiral staircase were built in the 16th century. Further enlarged in the 18th century, the château had its interior décor remodelled. It holds a collection of 16th-century Brussels tapestries.
