Remiremont
Remiremont grew up at the foot of the Vosges mountains around an abbey of canonesses founded in the seventh century, whose influence spread over the whole region for more than a thousand years. The Grande Rue, the main street lined along its whole length with eighteenth-century stone arcades, is the town's most characteristic sight, sheltering shops and cafés from the weather in an architectural arrangement rare in France. The abbey church of Saint-Pierre, with its Romanesque crypt and treasury, bears witness to this rich religious past, while the Charles-de-Bruyères museum keeps collections of natural history and regional art. Marking the entrance to the Vosges mountains, Remiremont is a popular gateway to the range's resorts and the Route des Crêtes, between urban heritage and the surrounding nature.
