Épinal

Vosges, Grand Est

Épinal owes its worldwide fame to its popular prints, the colourful engravings produced since the eighteenth century by the Pellerin works, which have become part of France's cultural heritage and are now shown at the Musée de l'Image. The town is organised around the Moselle and its arms, which enclose several islands laid out as gardens and parks, offering fine views of the quays and flower-decked bridges. Overlooking the historic centre, the remains of the medieval castle, a former strategic bolt of the Duchy of Lorraine, have been turned into a landscaped park with a wide panorama of the town and valley. The departmental museum of ancient and contemporary art, one of the richest in the Grand Est, completes this cultural offer with collections from ancient Egypt to modern art, making Épinal a major cultural stop at the foot of the Vosges mountains.
