Château d'Epinal

Vosges, Grand Est

Built by the Bishop of Metz, Jacques de Lorraine, around the middle of the thirteenth century, succeeding an earlier fortress of around the year 1000 that was one of the first fortresses of the southern Vosges. Enlarged by the Dukes of Lorraine in the early sixteenth century, the castle was destroyed by Louis XIV's troops in 1670. In its gardens, forgotten plants are grown, such as wormwood, the "priest's rose", flax, woad and madder, as well as vegetables threatened with extinction such as Archettes turnips; spaces that offer pleasant moments of relaxation and walks.
