Parc de la Tête d'Or
The zoo was created in 1858 in the Parc de la Tête d'Or. It was then the second zoological establishment in France open to the public, after the Ménagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris (1793). The zoo covers 8 hectares and has about 800 animals. Originally it showed domestic and wild animals of local and exotic fauna: a herd of twenty fallow deer, dairy cows to supply milk to children and fertilise the lawns, and a varied collection of animals: wolves, foxes, hyenas, bears, wild and domestic ruminants, monkeys, crocodiles, pheasants, poultry and other birds.
