Paimpol

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

Immortalised by Pierre Loti's novel "An Iceland Fisherman", Paimpol built its legend on the distant cod-fishing campaigns its schooners undertook every year to the icy waters of Iceland, at the cost of a very high death toll at sea, recalled by the monument to the Icelanders in the cemetery. The wet dock, now a lively marina, has kept its old Breton port atmosphere, lined with shipowners' houses and crêperies. A starting point for discovering the Bréhat archipelago and the spectacular landscapes of the Sillon de Talbert, the town is also a major centre of Breton oyster farming, an activity that can be seen on the foreshore during the bay's spring tides.
