Saint-Brieuc

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

Perched on a granite plateau crossed by two deep valleys, Saint-Brieuc owes its name to a Welsh missionary monk who settled here in the early Middle Ages. The Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, fortress-like with its crenellated towers inherited from the Wars of Religion, dominates the historic centre, where some half-timbered houses survive around the Place du Martray.

The town is organised around its wooded valleys, now laid out as urban walks that offer an unexpected rural contrast to the busy town centre. Close by, the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, famous for the spectacular range of its tides and its oyster farming, completes this stop between land and sea in the heart of the département.
