Jardin de Kerdalo
The Kerdalo gardens are in the French commune of Trédarzec in the Côtes-d'Armor département (Brittany). Created in 1965 by Peter Wolkonsky, they have been on the list of remarkable gardens since 2005 and were added to the inventory of Historic Monuments in 2007. The Kerdalo gardens extend over 18 hectares, along a deep valley that descends gently towards the Jaudy river. This English-style landscape garden borrows various elements of Italian or exotic inspiration. Above the manor are tiered Italian terraces planted with exotic specimens. A long rectangular basin in the upper part of the valley ends in a Chinese-inspired pagoda. Located below the manor courtyard, the "garden of four squares" is a formal garden of Italian inspiration. Made of interlocking chequerboards, it is planted with four beds of perennials and bordered by two corner pavilions. Several ponds and basins are tiered along the valley. At the very bottom, a flagged path crosses a basin bordered by enormous Brazilian gunneras and leads to an Italianate grotto decorated with shell figures.
