Nyons

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Nestled in a basin sheltered from the north winds by the foothills of the Baronnies, Nyons enjoys a microclimate so mild that olive groves thrive up to the town's gates, a rarity at this latitude that earns it the nickname little capital of the olive. The Roman bridge, an elegant medieval single-arch structure spanning the Eygues in a single leap of more than forty metres, structures the silhouette of the old town, whose vaulted lanes called "andrones" protect from sun as from mistral. The traditional oil mills, some of which are still working, perpetuate a centuries-old olive-growing know-how that you can discover on site, while the Thursday morning market, one of the most renowned of the Drôme provençale, gathers all the produce of the local terroir.
