Montélimar

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

A classic stop on the holiday route between the Rhône valley and Provence, Montélimar owes its national fame to nougat, an almond and honey confection the town has claimed as its own since the seventeenth century, whose traditional factories can still be visited along the old Route Nationale 7. The Château des Adhémar, a medieval fortress perched on its rocky promontory, overlooks the old town and its plane-shaded squares, while the Baroque collegiate church of Sainte-Croix bears witness to the town's rich religious past. The ramparts and fortified gates still visible recall that Montélimar was long a stronghold disputed between the Dauphiné and Provence, before becoming this unmissable gourmet stop on the road south.
