Crevasses de Chantemerle

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Chantemerle crevasses are a narrow fault in the limestone plateau of Chantemerle-lès-Grignan, in the Drôme. The phenomenon is explained by the breaking of a plateau lying on a softer layer, linked to the Pierrelatte fault. According to some local sources, a large rock block slid and fractured during a series of earthquakes in the region between June 1772 and December 1773, which gave rise to walls up to about 70 metres high.

A small circuit, sometimes called the Poets' Path, lets you walk between the walls, where big ivy plants cling in search of light. Marking exists only on the upper part of the route. This discreet, little-visited site offers an original geological curiosity in the heart of the Drôme garrigue.
