Château des Adhémar

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

On the heights of Montélimar, this twelfth-century medieval palace comprises a fortified enclosure, a lord's residence with fine round-arched openings, a keep and a Romanesque chapel. Home of the Adhémar de Monteil family, then a papal and later Dauphiné possession, the fortress became a citadel with powerful bastions at the end of the sixteenth century. Used as a prison from 1791 to 1926, the castle was listed as a Historic Monument in 1889.

Acquired by the Drôme Département, it now houses a contemporary art centre that hosts exhibitions all year round.
