Château de Chamaret

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The castle of Chamaret, in the Drôme, stands at the top of a mound in a medieval village. In 1696 and 1772 the north part of the castle collapsed, and in 1895 the tower was restored and rearranged to give it its present appearance. It is a square tower reinforced by a buttress, with a castle. Two rings of fortifications and two living quarters survive, one of them next to the keep.

The village of Chamaret overlooks the Tricastin and Rhône plain. The climb to the tower offers a fine panorama over the countryside and vineyards, and the village lanes are pleasant to explore on foot.
