Château de Suze-la-Rousse

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Built on a rocky promontory, the medieval fortress is a spectacular military work protected by its towers and rampart. It was transformed in the sixteenth then the eighteenth century into a grand residence. The austerity of the outer defences that powerfully overlook the fortified village contrasts with the Renaissance façades of the court of honour, as well as the interior richness of the paintings, stucco and plasterwork of the drawing rooms served by a monumental double-flight staircase. Around the listed Historic Monument castle spreads the warren in which still stand the walls of a sixteenth-century real tennis court, a dovecote and a chapel.

The castle, which also houses the Wine University, offers temporary exhibitions, concerts and more through the seasons.
