Tour de Crest

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The highest keep in France, 52 metres tall, the Tour de Crest is the guardian of one of the rare gateways of the Drôme Prealps. Its construction began in the twelfth century. It was originally the major component of a vast fortress overlooking the town of Crest. The Tour de Crest served as a prison until the nineteenth century and became national property after the Revolution. It was only in 1988, a hundred years after its listing as a Historic Monument, that the Town of Crest bought the Tower.
