Nancy

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est

Nancy, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle, was founded as a stronghold in the early eleventh century and became the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. Stanislas Leszczynski, last Duke of Lorraine, deeply marked the town before its annexation to France in 1766. It now has about 104,000 inhabitants.

Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, an example of eighteenth-century urbanism, have been inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1983. From the Middle Ages, the town has kept the Porte de la Craffe, an old fortified gate. Nancy was also a great centre of Art Nouveau with the École de Nancy, where artists such as Émile Gallé worked, and its achievements such as the Villa Majorelle. The centre thus combines old town, classical district and turn-of-the-twentieth-century architecture.
