Musée Fesch

Corse-du-Sud, Corse

Set in the Palais Fesch in the very heart of Ajaccio, the Fine Arts Museum gathers painting collections, a large part of which come from Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763–1839), Napoleon's maternal uncle, Archbishop of Lyon, Primate of the Gauls, a great art lover and enlightened patron. Wishing to have an Institute of Sciences and Arts built in his native town, Cardinal Fesch bequeathed to Ajaccio a thousand paintings from his fabulous collection which at his death counted more than 17,000 works of art including about 16,000 paintings.

Of this private collection essentially devoted to Italian painting, one of the most important that ever existed, only the set kept at the Palais Fesch remains.
