L'archipel des Sanguinaires
The Sanguinaires archipelago is formed of four rocky islets at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio, in Corse-du-Sud: Mezzu Mare (the Grande Sanguinaire), the islet of Cormorants, Cala d'Alga and Porri. They are the remains of a granite and diorite promontory fragmented over millennia.
Mezzu Mare, the largest island, covers 34 hectares and bears a lighthouse at 80 metres' altitude, automated in 1985. The archipelago has been classified a Grand Site de France since 2017 and belongs to a Natura 2000 site. A hundred and a half plant species grow there, and the islands serve as a refuge for seabirds.
You admire them from the Pointe de la Parata, accessible by road, or during boat trips from Ajaccio, which offer in some cases a landing on Mezzu Mare. You must stay on the paths and not approach the nests.
