Pains de sucre du Tretorre

Corse-du-Sud, Corse

Mont Tretorre, in the Monte Rotondo massif, peaks at about 1,510 metres' altitude. It overlooks the Fiume Grossu valley to the north and the Cruzzini valley to the south, at the junction of the communes of Azzana, Guagno and Poggiolo. Its summit is formed of three rocky pinnacles evoking sugar loaves, cut in syenite, a rock close to granite. This syenite is a geological rarity: it is rich in garnets of the pyrenéite type.

The climb generally begins at the village of Guagno. The path crosses a forest of Corsican pines before reaching the rocky ridges of the summit. The rock there is carved with flutings and cavities shaped by erosion, called taffoni. The summit is visible from many villages of the valley.
