Ajaccio
Ajaccio is the prefecture of Corse-du-Sud and the largest town on the island, with a little over 76,000 inhabitants. It opens onto the west coast, at the head of a gulf stretching about seventeen kilometres. A bishopric existed there before the sixth century, and the Genoese refounded the town on 16 April 1492 on the Lechia point, where they began the citadel a few days later.
Napoleon was born there on 15 August 1769, which earned it the nickname "imperial city"; in 1811 he made it the prefecture. The cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was completed in 1593, and the citadel still overlooks the gulf. The Sanguinaires islands are part of the communal territory. A cruise port and port for sea links to the mainland and Sardinia, Ajaccio is also served by an international airport.
