Montrésor

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire

Standing on the banks of the Indrois, Montrésor seems to have stayed apart from all modernisation. Below, white tuffeau houses run along the river and gradually climb the slope. You will see fifteenth- and sixteenth-century dwellings, including one in wood, leading to the collegiate church and the castle, both Renaissance. The whole has very fine unity, with its flat-tile roofs and all those picturesque details that organised life in the past: wash-house, fountain, grain hall... Yet Montrésor did not always have this kindly, refined look; in the eleventh century, Fulk Nerra, taking advantage of this rocky promontory protected to the north by a ravine and to the south by the river, made it a powerful fortress. It is on its foundations that the present castle was built: it too was more imposing, only the main building remains today.
