Les Pozzines de Coscione
The Coscione plateau stretches at about 1,500 metres' altitude in the Monte Incudine massif, in the south of Corsica. Its rolling relief, springs and streamlets give it a green look, unique on the island. There are beeches, firs and fragrant alders, under a damper and colder climate than on the coast.
The site is best known for its pozzines, those boggy, waterlogged meadows, dotted with pools. It also has exceptional botanical interest. The plateau is used for pastoralism, as shown by the many sheepfolds and mountain refuges. It is part of the Corsica Regional Nature Park and of a Natura 2000 site. Several paths cross it, including the GR 20, and in winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are practised there.
