Les gorges du Nan et Cascade de la Gerlette

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Nan gorges are a canyon of the Vercors massif linking Malleval-en-Vercors, upstream, to Cognin-les-Gorges, downstream, in Isère. They were carved by the Nan, a small tributary of the Isère six kilometres long. A path starts from Cognin-les-Gorges and follows the river upstream, with many waterfalls that help it tumble down the slope.

The gorge road was created in 1894 in place of an old muleteers' path linking the two villages, of which remains can still be seen along the torrent. The site was listed as a Sensitive Natural Area by the département of Isère in July 2015. The peregrine falcon nests there, and two protected plants grow there: the Spanish juniper and the elegant spleenwort, a fern that clings in the cracks of the cliff.

Several hiking routes start from Cognin-les-Gorges following the Nan upstream. The neighbouring Coulmes forest offers refuge in hot summers thanks to its deep woods and its watering points.
