Les Cascades de Cauterets
The Pont d'Espagne is a natural site in the commune of Cauterets, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, at about 1,500 metres' altitude. It lies at 1,496 metres, at the confluence of the Marcadau and Gaube mountain streams, where several valleys meet and the water cascades down. The flows are most impressive in spring, at snowmelt.
The area is part of the protected zones of the Pyrenees and lies within the national park perimeter. It is reached only from Cauterets, by a paying car park, then on foot or by the lifts. A stone bridge spans the torrent; the Gaube waterfall, near a small restaurant, is one of the site's highlights.
The Pont d'Espagne is the starting point of several hikes, notably to Lac de Gaube and the Marcadau valley, and gives access to the GR 10. In winter, it also has cross-country ski trails.
