Lac Bleu de lesponne

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie

Lac Bleu de Lesponne, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, occupies a cirque of glacial origin on the north slope of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, at about 1,950 metres' altitude. About fifty hectares in size, it is among the deepest lakes in the Pyrenees, with more than a hundred metres depth according to sources. Its waters take on an intense blue tint in fine weather. A gallery bored in 1831 lets the flow of the Adour be regulated.

The classic hike starts from the Chiroulet car park, at the end of the Lesponne valley, and first crosses a beech forest on a good path. Lac Vert, about 500 metres to the east and a little higher up, is linked to it. It is best to start early in the morning to enjoy the shade and avoid crowds in midsummer. Experienced walkers can continue towards Lac d'Ourrec or the Pène de Pouri.
