Lac de Gaube

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie

Lac de Gaube occupies a glacial basin in the valley of the same name, above Cauterets, in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Its deep blue waters, fed by the melting of snow and glaciers of the neighbouring Vignemale massif, contrast with the steep rock walls that enclose it on all sides.

Situated in the Pyrenees national park, the site enjoys rich mountain biodiversity, with notably several protected species recorded in the Natura 2000 zones that cover the valley. The Vignemale, the highest summit of the French Pyrenees, dominates the landscape from the background, adding to the grandeur of the panorama.

Access is from the Pont d'Espagne by a hiking path of about an hour and a half's walk, or more quickly thanks to a chairlift that significantly reduces the effort. Trout, introduced in the lake, also attracts a few anglers during the summer season, the best period for a visit.
