Lac de Cap de Long

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie

At an altitude of 2,160 metres, the Lac de Cap de Long is, after the Lac de Lanoux, the second largest reservoir in the French Pyrenees: 110 hectares and a maximum depth of about 130 metres. The large dam built between 1950 and 1953 joined the old natural lake of Cap de Long and the Lac de l'Oustallat. Its name means "the head of the valley at the foot of the Pic Long".

Originally carved by glaciers in the Néouvielle granite, the lake is ringed by rock bands and peaks, including the Pic Maubic, over 3,000 metres high, and overlooked to the north by the Pic de Néouvielle and the Trois Conseillers. It borders the Néouvielle nature reserve, at the gateway to the Pyrenees National Park. Water from the Lac d'Aubert partly feeds it, and the lakes road reaches its shores in summer.
