Le Pic du Midi de Bigorre
The Pic du Midi de Bigorre is a summit in the Hautes-Pyrénées that peaks at about 2,870 metres. It is known for its astronomical observatory, attached to the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées, where the sky has been observed and research carried out since 1880, as well as for its television relay.
The summit is accessible to the public by a two-stage cable car from the La Mongie resort: the first reaches the Taoulet at about 2,300 metres, the second leads to the summit. The ride offers aerial views of the cirques and valleys.
At the top, you discover the panoramic terraces, which take in hundreds of kilometres of Pyrenean ridges, as well as the "Ponton dans le Ciel", a metal walkway suspended over the void. The Espace Expériences, an interactive museum route, recounts the history of the observatory and of the science practised there.
