La vallée du Fango
The Fango is a small coastal river in Haute-Corse, 22.6 kilometres long, with a basin of 129 km². It rises on the west slope of Capu Tafunatu, at about 2,000 metres' altitude, in the commune of Albertacce. It flows north-west and enters the Mediterranean in the Gulf of Galéria, north of Galéria. It crosses three communes: Albertacce, Manso and Galéria.
Its average flow is 2.17 m³/s at Galéria, but it can vary greatly and suffer violent floods. The whole valley is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, created in 1977. There is a forest of old holm oaks, of which the Piriu wood has not been exploited since 1850. The watercourse forms waterfalls, pools and natural slides, which makes it a site for swimming and river hiking.
