La Cascade de la Meuse

Gard, Occitanie

The Cascade de la Meuse, also called the Cascade de la Vis, is at Saint-Laurent-le-Minier, in the Gard, in the Vis valley, a few kilometres from the Cirque de Navacelles. The Gard tourist office describes it as an artificial waterfall, formed by a structure on the river.

According to the sources, this work, associated with a dam and an aqueduct, is said to have served to run mills and supply the gardens of the neighbouring château. The château of Saint-Laurent-le-Minier dates from the seventeenth century.

From the bridge over the Vis, the fall appears in a setting of rocks and greenery, with droplets hanging in the air. Visitors bathe in the pools downstream, but bathing in the fall itself is dangerous and forbidden. The site is very busy in summer and parking rules vary with the season.
