Cascade du Sautadet

Gard, Occitanie

The Sautadet waterfalls are on the Cèze, near La Roque-sur-Cèze, a village in Gard listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Here, the river has carved its bed into limestone about five million years old, forming channels and cavities that join in places into crevasses where the water rushes in.

The most spectacular features are the giant's kettles: cylindrical cavities, some several metres across, carved into the rock by the swirling movement of pebbles carried by the current.

In 1993, the falls and more than 400 hectares of the commune were listed as a protected natural area. The site is also part of the Natura 2000 network under the name La Cèze et ses gorges. It is described as exceptional but dangerous: currents and slippery rocks call for caution from visitors who approach the water.
