La Basilique de Fourvière
The basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière overlooks the city of Lyon from the top of the Fourvière hill, on the site of the old Forum of Trajan. Its neo-Byzantine or Romano-Byzantine architecture is the work of Pierre Bossan. One of the most visible landmarks of the urban area, like the Part-Dieu tower, the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of the symbols of Lyon. It gives Lyon its status as a Marian city. The basilica belongs to the perimeter of Old Lyon inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1998. From 2008 until 2012, restoration works are under way to preserve this heritage, the leading tourist site of Rhône-Alpes.
