Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Èze is a commune of the Alpes-Maritimes that stretches from the seafront to a rocky peak of about 430 metres' altitude, where the medieval village of Èze-Village is perched. The coast is occupied by the hamlet of Èze-sur-Mer, on the Mediterranean, between Nice and Monaco.

The site has been inhabited since Antiquity, as the neighbouring oppidum of Le Castellar shows. The village had a lordly period in the Middle Ages, before being attached to France in 1860. Its steep lanes climb to the ruins of an old castle, where an exotic garden has been laid out with a remarkable view of the sea. A steeply sloping path, the Nietzsche path, links the seaside to the village; tradition has it that the philosopher drew inspiration from it for part of "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". Tourism is now the commune's main resource.
