Conciergerie

Paris, Île-de-France

In the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine, visit the Conciergerie, the oldest surviving part of the Palais de la Cité, the capital's first royal residence and a prison during the French Revolution. The prison occupied the ground floor of the building running along the Quai de l'Horloge and the two towers; the upper floor was reserved for the Parliament. The Conciergerie prison was considered during the Terror as the antechamber of death. Few left it free. Queen Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned there in 1793.

The monument is managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, to which it was assigned as an endowment by an order of 2 April 2008. It can now be visited; temporary exhibitions are held there.

Extensive works were undertaken on the building in early 2011.
