Cirque et Gorges de Flumen
The Flumen gorges form a canyon of the Jura massif, on the boundary of the communes of Septmoncel and Saint-Claude. The Flumen torrent, which carved them, crosses a rocky spur then falls in successive cascades over about 500 m, in a natural cirque before the Septmoncel ridge.
Several waterfalls descend side by side: the one on the left is the Flumen itself, the others are resurgences that come underground from Lake Lamoura.
The gorges have been listed since 1989 for their picturesque character, over more than 500 hectares, and are also recognised as an area of ecological interest. Four hiking circuits, three for the casual public and one for experienced walkers, link various points of the site, including the Roche Blanche viewpoint and the Chapeau de Gendarme rock.
