Châteauneuf

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Intended to command the old road from Dijon to Autun, the fortress was built in the late twelfth century by Jean de Chaudenay. It owes its severity to its polygonal enclosure flanked by massive towers and its wide moats, crossed by one of the old drawbridges. In the inner courtyard, the original keep is surrounded by two residential buildings built in the fifteenth century. Below the castle, the fifteenth-century church houses a fourteenth-century Virgin with a bird. Facing the building, the Maison Blondeau is one of the many dwellings that belonged to Burgundian merchants in the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that punctuate the visit of the town.
