Château de Châteauneuf

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Built in 1132 by Jean de Chaudenay for his son Jehan, the castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, in the Côte-d'Or, stands on a rocky spur rising to four hundred and seventy-five metres, above the Burgundy Canal.

Over the centuries the fortress passed through the hands of several great figures. During the French Revolution the site suffered much damage and was sold at auction; it was not until 1930 that Count Georges de Vogüé gave it to the State. Rich in architecture and culture, the castle houses fine wool and silk tapestries, some depicting episodes from the life of Moses.
