Château des ducs de Savoie

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The château des ducs de Savoie rises at the end of the Montjay hill, in the heart of Chambéry. It was the main residence of the House of Savoy from 1295 to 1563. Burned several times, it now forms a group of buildings whose construction ranges from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century.

The adjoining Sainte-Chapelle kept from 1502 to 1578 the Holy Shroud, now in Turin.

The castle is discovered on guided tours: the visit of the Cité des Ducs and the Sainte-Chapelle lasts about an hour and a half and takes place at weekends; themed tours are offered, such as History and Secrets of the House of Savoy or The Château in Revolution. The state rooms are accessible during exceptional visits and during the European Heritage Days. Visits must be booked in advance with the tourist office.
