Château de Suscinio
An impressive fortress built and remodelled in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries on the edge of the ocean, the château de Suscinio was one of the favourite residences of the dukes of Brittany. Passed to the French crown in 1520, the castle gradually fell into ruin and, sold as national property at the Revolution, then served as a stone quarry. The Morbihan Conseil Général, owner since 1965, has undertaken major restoration work there with the help of the State and the region. Today seven towers and their curtain walls of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries are preserved. In addition the castle houses a museum of the history of Brittany and the Morbihan. Notably presented are very rich medieval floor tiles discovered on the edge of the moat.
