Château-Gaillard (Vannes)

Morbihan, Bretagne

Château-Gaillard in Vannes, in the Morbihan, the former seat of the Parlement of Brittany, is an old townhouse built in the early 15th century by Jean de Malestroit, chancellor to the Duke of Brittany and Bishop of Nantes. Possibly linked to the walls of the first town enclosure that bound its garden, its origins are poorly documented.

Since 2000 it has housed the town's museum of history and archaeology, owned by the Société Polymathique du Morbihan. Its collections include prehistoric finds, notably from the megaliths of the Gulf of Morbihan. Its granite façade and position in the old town, near the cathedral, make it a pleasant stop on a visit to Vannes.
