Château de Sully-sur-Loire

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire

The château de Sully-sur-Loire, with its high towers and deep moats, is a fine example of a medieval fortress. It was built in the late fourteenth century, on a site that since Gallo-Roman times had commanded one of the few crossings of the Loire. The estate later belonged to Maximilien de Béthune, duke of Sully, minister of Henry IV, and keeps his name.

The visit lets you walk through the castle's rooms, some of which, like the roof frame of the great keep, are remarkable. During Heritage Days, an unusual tour offers to climb more than a hundred and twenty steps to reach a tower usually closed to the public.

The castle also organises routes and events according to the seasons, for example a Halloween trail in autumn. The staircase does not allow access to the rooms for people with reduced mobility. Sully is in the east of the Loiret, on the Loire.
