Château de Penne
The fortress of Penne stands on a rocky spur above the Aveyron gorges, in the Tarn, near the border of the Tarn-et-Garonne. Listed as a historic monument in 1902, the castle was taken in turn by the English and by bands of mercenaries during the Hundred Years' War.
The keep, ramparts and a chapel survive. Sources differ on its date of construction, between the 12th and 13th centuries. Restoration, begun after its listing, is still going on.
The site is open from mid-February to mid-November. Visitors follow an interpretation trail with illustrated panels and can enjoy costumed tours, events and a medieval building site. A walking loop reserved for site visitors has been offered since September 2023. The village of Penne also keeps a few remains of its walls.
